One underappreciated difference between electric and gas infrastructure is that gas pipelines leak methane, which is terrible for climate and can blow up, injuring or killing people. Urban gas infrastructure poses far higher risks than power lines simply by existing, even if we use it very little.

An end to oil spills and gas explosions isn’t hyped enough as a major side-benefit of decarbonization.

Related note, when I was at the Fairfax County Courthouse maybe a decade ago, they still had gas streetlights there on the lane in front of it.
