Just because Americans *outside* of California feel uncomfortable with their interpretation of the optics does not mean that people defending their own communities should alter their approaches to make outsiders feel more comfortable.

Ultimately, if you feel compelled to express your worries regarding what Fox News will say about a protester with a flag, ask yourself: would that protester care even a little bit about my opinion?
I am writing this from my home in the East Bay, where my neighbor tells me to 'have a beautiful day mija' every morning. If you don't know what life in California feels like, your opinions on what we do and how we do it in defense of our own are meaningless to me
I lived in Chicago for a few years. Very common to see Irish flags on homes, firehouses and around police stations. Many more of those flags are flown in mid March.
Many neighborhoods in Chicago fly Polish, Ukrainian, and Serbian flags. I played soccer on Serbian and Croatian teams in the 90s.
