Maybe it was my misunderstanding but weren't the NPCs in HL1 specifically and strictly scripted, kind of the opposite of what we thought of as "AI" back then?
Interesting that they replaced the A with the lambda and not the L, for which it is the Greek letter. (I know, the lambda looks a bit like a capital A.)
The developers may have felt that, from a purely graphic design perspective, had the title read HAAF AIFE it might not have resonated so much with prospective players
