you're right, I misremembered -- it's full professorship. which is almost worse! it's not "independent" money keeping him in a job! (also Prasad is apparently director of CBER now? Christ.)

Yeah, Bhattacharaya is understandable. For many years he resembled a boring, fairly typical soft money med school prof. It's easy to see how he was promoted (I've served on a large med school A&P committee).
UCSF Spi/Biostat's decision to recruit Prasad is vastly harder to understand.
I am an OHSU prof. I admired Vinay's early work and was disappointed to see him leave. But he became a monster during Covid, although now seems to be trying to recapture his earlier days.
Agree his early days were okay, but I don’t think he’s trying to recapture that. He’s trying to capitulate to RFK & Trump to boost his own power while lording it over others, like how in COVID he was pandering to far-right audiences to gain a sense of power. IMO, all of it is absolutely disgusting
Ya, his Covid statements were really a huge alarm going off that he was veering very far from established science. At that point his work should have really been addressing his opinions and actions.
The thing to understand about Prasad is that his entire career has been built on criticizing the work of others. He has never himself made a single affirmative discovery that has increased anyone's DALYs.
On social media that's largely been criticizing the works of others while BLOCKING them from being able to respond. I'm pretty confident most people participating in commenting on this post, were very likely on Prasad's block list across multiple social platforms. 😅

Of course, I am an OHSU alum, so would argue that Prasad's recruitment improved *both* OHSU and UCSF Epi/Biostat.
