I don’t know how to explain this to people if they’ve never experienced a local campaign, but it isn’t really about selling yourself in the market of ideas. It’s a desperate knife fight in a dimly lit basement and your main opponent is your own party unless you were the pre-designated elite choice.

The local machine will do everything legal and extra legal it can to ensure you never even end up on the ballot, and if you do, they will try to ruin your reputation. If you win, they will do whatever they can to sideline you so you accomplish nothing you promised so they can beat you next time.

i think it will take an unfortunately extreme crisis point to bust through a lot of california, particularly the most powerful parts of it. think of the effects in san francisco that unaffordable housing and constant police crackdowns on the poor and homeless has on voter makeup.

to navigate through that, it would make far more sense to actually focus on on the ground, material alliances to make within specifically New York itself and voters within instead of some general, airy, national Get Along campaign. you want to remove Schumer, you need voters in NY, not in Maine.

what's more: for the parts of it that didn't depend on money for its success, the tea party was fueled by boiling, white hot anger that gave them tons of momentum and left establishment GOP on the backfoot, flailing as they tried to stop the tide here.

anger very much can get results.
