I'm not going to dunk on someone for asking this about Sinners because it's staggering how expensive films are, but I want to point out that beyond VFX labor and tech, Coogler gave SO MANY people work and he made sure you stayed for the credits to give them their due respect with those epilogues. - ThreadSky

I'm sorry, but I can't believe that person's argument was made in good faith. Did they SEE the movie? Did they see that elaborate long shot of people walking from one store to another in a very busy street? Did they see THAT shot when Sammie plays at the club? Isn't it simply racism?

I'm pretty sure the person wasn't asking it in a racist way. I think it is just a misconception of what goes into filmmaking, especially excellent period specific filmmaking. But I hear you - it looks so perfectly normal because it is so professionally (and expensively) made

Of course you can get old clothes from a thrift store, but for anything the camera gets a good look at the wardrobe department are going to need old *style* clothes that *look* new, and will do that by making them. So all those are essentially custom-made one-offs, and that doesn't come cheap.

Hundreds of people worked on this film, and if you stayed for the credits, even if it was just goaded by Coogler to see the bonus scenes, you may have noticed that he had a section in his credits for "incarcerated workers" who were mostly musicians he hired to work on the film.

There was a twin consultant. That was the detail in the credits that got me. That in addition to having a hoodoo consultant, they had someone to consult about twins.

Through and through, the film itself and its place in its contemporary Hollywood and cultural contexts are exceptional.

Coogler deserves so much praise for what he's done here, and not least for his reminder that a film is made even better when you stay to acknowledge the people who made it.

And not for nothing, but it's not a coincidence that streaming services (Prime, Netflix) cut the credits into a small box while trying to feed you other titles. They don't respect workers enough to let you even see their names and union bugs.

Stay for the credits and see what goes into filmmaking.

I complained multiple times to Netflix about that activity. I told them I enjoy how the end music often transports you gently back into the real world.
“Yes, we’ve been getting that complaint a lot recently,”
That way so many years ago now…😓
