Since the war of independence was motivated partly by the colonists' desire to keep slavery, the US seems to have events both celebrating keeping and abolishing slavery. Time changes perceptions of history, often airbrushing out the bits that people don't want to remember.

The 1621 celebration was the celebration of victory in battle as the Pilgrims agreed to help the Wampanoag people fight and kill a rival tribe. In exchange they were taught by the tribe how to grow crops and love off the new land.
It was also a treaty celebration that would be broken.

It’s the true winter holiday of patriotic northern freedom-loving Americans, who at the time mostly *didn’t* celebrate the late December holiday. With some exceptions (Dutch New York that gave us Santa Claus) Christmas was the preserve of the high church, which meant the south.

The Separatists were the Taliban before there was a Taliban. They came here to setup their own theocracy. After they mostly eradicated the Pequot tribe, they passed a law making it a capital crime to even mention their name. Melville was charged under that law for the name of his ship in Moby Dick.
