I think of course they should have drafted melo but its totally possible they don't win the title if they do. (And of course i guess its possible they win in back to back if they draft him lol, we'll never know). For making an all time draft blunder, things worked out pretty damn good gotta say.

yeah I’ve heard that argument before and it holds more water than ‘we already had Tayshaun’ … but I’m not sure I’m ready to say they’d have never gotten Sheed. They were all-in that year and may have been buyers regardless

That last line is less about the team and moreso about the city as a whole, tbf. Detroit never gets a break for. It's always hard, and when we finally figure one thing out, there's always another problem or catastrophe to fix - frequently one we caused.

Hot take... They wouldn't have won the 04 title if they'd drafted Melo.
They probably don't trade for Rasheed with Melo, and the team's defense wouldn't have been nearly what it was.
The 07 title? Maybe a different story.
