I live in a place that gets very cold and is also dry. Fakey/mcfakerhan-looking white things falling all over. We get lots of hoarfrost, also. Looks like spray snow from a Disney or Hallmark X-mas movie.

I know right? I remember I had ones like that land on me in 2012 (I think that was the year) and I was legit shocked. Like "Did I just walk into a cartoon? Why do these snowflakes look so snowflake?" I had no idea that they could actually look like that. Nature is amazing. 🤯

Yes. It's not common to see them completely formed though because they usually crumble and melt by the time they get to the surface. But if it's cold and dry enough, chances are higher you'll see a complete snowflake.

I didn’t grow up around snow unless I was skiing and it was already on the ground and I was very surprised to learn they were big and visible to the naked eye and not like a microscopic structure

If you go out while it's snowing and draw or write something on paper with ink, individual snowflakes will suck up the ink and imprint themselves on the paper. It makes for a unique letter.

I discovered the effect on a ski trip, while writing a postcard on a chairlift. Unfortunately it rarely snows where I live, but someone could make some interesting art with the technique.
