THE CONNERS was a weird show, even ignoring the “we have to rename the show because the character, who was a strongly progressive woman, was played by a raging bigot” aspect.
It was hard to see plots actually resolve in an episode, almost becoming a serialized soap opera.
I think they never really knew how to handle the wide cast and sprawling continuity. They effectively erased chunks of the original series, and beyond loose references of the famous Two Beckys, never had any of the meta humor of the original.

I didn’t hate the show, but I think it never truly knew what it wanted to be, and it honestly would have been better if it WAS episodic.
Let it be comfort food.
Yet, that final fourth-wall-break got me.
