My own mother, who has my younger autistic brother and has been supportive of him for decades now, tells stories about my quirky childhood doing things like picking raisins out of raisin bran so it was "the right cereal" I would accept. She has never, even once, suggested I might also be autistic.
Part 2. We had genetic testing on MY son when he was diagnosed that found genetic markers that were "abnormal" and that he shared with me, but were described as obviously not related to autism because I had them and I was obviously not autistic. Professionals dismissed it that quickly.
I was a newspaper reporter and it involved frequent use of telephones, being up front at crowded events, and constant engagement and eye contact. My stomach was in knots and every minute was a rush of deadlines.
COVID ate that job. RELIEF! No one can believe I think I'm autistic...
I put a post up on fb today going, so I did all the self assessments and Iām pretty sure I have autism. And all my autistic friends, were like hello and welcome, and some of my friends who I thought were NT were like, yeah me too! So now Iām feeling much better about life!
You get so good at faking you even convince yourself you can't possibly be autistic until The Algorithm keeps showing you other people with autism discussing their lived experience and you start relating a little too well to each of them.
in my experience, its not only learning social scripts and adapting so "u are normal what do u mean u cant socialize" while inside ur overstimulated, occasionally panic/freeze and talking urself and using logic / mind to do it
but also fucking up a lot and being told ur a crappy idiot nothing wrong
so, even the parts where u do show like classic "I fucked this up, i missed this context, i did this or that" because you seem "normal" this will be called stupidity, a character flaw, or something like this.

Is this controversial?
I feel that there must be a lot of people clogging up the system who are not really autistic who simply notice they have some "traits".
This is preventing people with genuine struggles from accessing help.
Struggles which are or have severely damaged their life.
