Nixon had an enemies list, and wasn't above using the FBI to undermine them. He politicized the civil service in ways that echo into our current situation. He was a proto-Trump, not in his populism but in his view of Presidential power: "If the President does it, it is not illegal."
I've read biographies of Nixon and histories of the period. He wasn't a Trump, for a number of reasons. But the reason he resigned was no moral stance but the prospect of overwhelming support for impeachment by both parties, which the modern GOP will never summon the backbone to do to Trump.
