The psychopathic delusion part is saying that the second one is a fix-all so that we don’t need to reduce emissions or protect forests anymore. Carbon storage is definitely needed though. Direct air capture is a bit insane but capture and storage of existing emissions is doable and should be done.
Yeah step 1 and 2 sound nice but it’s like saying “after abolishing capitalism there won’t be any need for redistribution of wealth anymore”. I agree that it’s a bad idea to frame CO2 storage as some kind of offset but anything that’s viable should be used asap.
Except trees only store CO2 on the order of decades to centuries, while carbon capture and geological storage stores CO2 on the order of tens of thousands of years. We need both!
Thermodynamics isn't really relevant here. The Earth is not a closed system in terms of energy - there's a continuous input of energy available from the sun. It's how we use that which is important.
No more loose than the original post. Thermodynamics isn't a restriction on CCS, or any other action to help remediate climate change. The restriction is how the energy needed for the process is generated.
Fair enough. I'm generally against geoengineering, and there's some debate whether or not CCS would be included in that. But the idea of putting the carbon back where it came from has an attraction.
yeah, i just think a million years of algal bloom, due to us lollygagging, is more likely to do that than any petro-giants pet pilot plant. and trees ar neat but if they were so great we would never have started digging for coal. the scale is orders of magnitudes off.
Wrapping my brain around the concept of using fossil fuel energy to extract FFs, refine, process, transport and consume FFs, and then using more fossil fuel energy to attempt to put the carbon back into rock reservoirs…
Sounds like a recipe for a warming planet with a third less guilt.

Stop cutting down forests
Step 2:
Cut emissions to zero
Neither step 1 or step 2 have even started. Forests are being cut down faster and faster and emissions are still increasing.
Carbon capture is for after steps 1 and 2 have been achieved
Sounds like a recipe for a warming planet with a third less guilt.
