I think if cohen really wanted alonso & saw him as essential to winning he would pay him. But he has Soto & clearly doesn’t see that much value from him. If the Jays didnt care they could have bid him up another $50M. That money is still available. They just dont think he’s worth it.

This is what I've been saying, too. A FA who wants to win will look at the Jays, see what's going on with Vlad (and many other elements) and figure it's not a team that's trying to win. Dodgers, though, have done the groundwork for that.

Jays being a really good org with families will get decent players who the Dodgers aren’t chasing. Or players who care more about their family needs & lifestyle than a guaranteed championship or 5. Everyone has the same roster size. So for the players who don’t care about that? Wins & $$$.

Player development is doing a lot of the damage for the Jays.

The Jays have had to spend almost half their payroll on starting pitching due to a lack of success developing pitchers. None of them are bad contracts, but it leaves you with zero room for error and a bleak looking future.

I've always assumed rogers doesn't have any specific interest in the Jays winning (or any other franchise in their holdings).

So long as they're making money.

They drummed up fanfare with the 2015 run and are just running on those coattails.
