I got really mad a couple of weeks ago at a thread in which people were saying TX docs who won’t provide abortion care are as bad as the legislators writing the anti-abortion bills! No provider is obligated to martyr themselves because government is enacting terrible policies.

I wonder if these bans also discourage other doctors from being in such states. Other specialties treat pregnant patients too. And do new doctors not want to go practice there either, especially those that plan on being pregnant. I don't think it's just OBGYNs that will leave.

I read somewhere that that is indeed the case, providers in general don’t want to practice under these laws and non-OB provider numbers are also being affected. I’m in MH, but I can easily imagine getting in trouble for giving a pt info/support.

Psychiatry, iirc, has 2nd greatest unmet US need. So I'm deluged with red state job offers, often with 6 figure sign-on bonuses.
B4 election, I'd politely call RS recruiters to say I can only safely care for pts who have reproductive freedom.
Many told me they heard that from multiple specialities.

Recruiters contacting me are/were disproportionately women: a great many said they wanted to leave the red state so they/fam could have reproductive freedom.
This is such a tragedy - and only beginning.

I’m sure there are some doctors and nurses who have made pacts to write down very specific orders when a pregnant woman comes in miscarrying so they can help her(because everything is noted in a computer from the very beginning.) We don’t hear about it because THOSE WOMEN LIVE.

Some of this dynamic is that many abortion bans aren't clearly defined. Partly that's because many of the people who write them don't understand the subject. And partly it's intentional, because not clearly defining the ban makes people more reluctant to push the boundaries.

It’s a nice fantasy to have a heroic doctor yelling “state laws be damned, I’ll save this woman!” It just doesn’t take into account at all how the way medicine is set up prevents it and how that heroic doctor wouldn’t be practicing for long enough to do it again.

I don't understand why there is not yet a huge war chest for suing the shit out of providers who let their patients die because of this. Not that I like that solution. I would think overt failure to meet standard of care is prima facie malpractice. Force the courts to deal with this.

All that would do is destroy providers’ lives and bankrupt hospitals and insurers. Your faith in the TX SC is misplaced: there was a case before them several months ago, and they claimed the law allows providers to intervene and the responsibility for bad outcomes is on them. Infuriating.

I wish all lawmakers in the 20+ states banning/ restricting abortion would read this. Their pandering to the relig right for votes comes with unintended consequences affecting womens’ health & safety. OBs were leaving bc of prohibiting insurance costs. Now they’re leaving bc they could go to jail.
