for those of us finding that habit to break, what are the alternatives ? apart from buying physical copies of music (which i still do) ? i find spotify a good way of finding new stuff, but open to new ideas
They don’t pay 90% of the artists anything at all and they then use that money to instead fund Rogan etc. So Spotify helped Trump etc immeasurably and they’re also investing in weapons tech. They remain absolutely morally reprehensible + their interface & algorithm are rubbish too. I could go on …..
On spotify you pay to listen to mp3 files instead of lossless formats (and the way spotify processes audio further enshitifies the listening experience)
I just started putting some of my music on streaming, so my album ’Final Wave’ is available EVERYWHERE… everywhere except Spotify because fk Daniel Ek 💩
I’ve moved to Apple Music which is to some extent frying pan->fire but the smaller artists I often listen to aren’t on other platforms. Bandcamp is great but not a streaming replacement
Incredibly thankful for this thread. I thought Tidal wasn't available in Australia, and it is! Going to give it a try and if I don't like it, some of the alternatives listed here.
It's where all music goes to be exploited. Musicians handing over their hard work like generic tins of beans to be turded out to the public for the sole benefit of millionaires.
using sites like album of the year while watching yt music critics helps you a LOT on discovering music too!
i did NOT know that poppy was making actually good pop metal
It's always a good time to re-evaluate all of your digital habits. Beyond twitter and spotify, there's instagram, google, windows... Give alternatives a try, it helps everyone.
I’ve been on Tidal for years now. It started as a protest against Joe Rogan and I’ve never gone back. I know it doesn’t make a big difference, but it’s what I can do.
Good to know! I switched to Tidal during the protests against Rogan giving oxygen to anti-vaxxers and haven’t gone back. My playlists and algorithms on Spotify were (are) a lot more robust but at this point I’m perfectly fine with the shift.
I was in a band once, released an EP electronically and Spotify pay something like 0.0005 pence per play. Maybe it’s because the music is niche or rubbish, but the cost of hosting the music on streaming services has consistently been 20 times the earnings. Use #Bandcamp instead!
Switched to Tidal and haven’t looked back. Excellent new music recommendations, they pay artists 4x what Spotify pays, and they stream lossless quality audio. I can’t believe I had been accepting such low quality listening for so long. 🥲
I’ve heard that, does Apple have a good discover feature? I like listening to the curated playlists to find new music. Also is there a way to port playlists? I have a yearly tradition of a massive playlist and I think hand porting them over would render me criminally insane
Sorry if already mentioned but #Deezer is great. Brilliant UI and I have never gone looking for something that they didn't have. Apparently they pay a lot more to artists than Spotify and give better deals to up and coming as opposed to the already successful artists.
A fanzine writer recently offered new bands some space in their zine but you had to provide a link to your Spotify. We had words, friendly, constructive words.
I don't use Spotify. I buy records. But I do use Apple Music as an alternative to lugging things around in my car. Damned when either a record isn't on Apple Music or a record is digital only.

Never spending money on that.
Already tried not using any streaming services...
Works great!

Unfortunately Spotify right now has my vote for best features of the user and ease of use.
Open to suggestions
2. I used tune my music to port my playlists over, though you have to pay for more than 500 songs.
Apple and Tidal both sound better. It's more fun to look and discover yourself vs the bot. The search is part of the fun once your unplugged.
