It’s so weird to me that so many people have this simplistic view of the world where only EVIL - corporations, billionaires (but not Taylor Swift/whoever is your favorite billionaire) - do anything bad ever. As if we can’t cause harm without intent.

Maybe another way to say this would be: 57 companies have business models that result in 80% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2016. Or, alternatively, 57 companies earn large profits by externalizing the costs of 80% of climate emissions (less precise, but perhaps more politically useful?).

I still place a slight majority of the blame on the top corporations because they've so successfully engineered society so that people so often don't have any other option but to burn their products. We live in an oligarchy, the consumer and voter choice is extremely limited :(

I agree with you on this one more than I agree with people who cite this to scream about how they should be able to do whatever they want.
But also I think it is important to change how we handle these things on the supply side, too. Very hard to e.g., quit plastic as a consumer!

We need systematic change AND that change has to genuinely affect how we live our lives. Because just telling people "stop it" ain't gonna solve the problem, we gotta overhaul it end to end in our resources, designs, supply chains, availabilities, and yes, our economics as well.

What drives me nuts about this is, if you believe it at face value, the obvious conclusion is to tax carbon! That would fall principally on these companies! But the same people who say this then turn around and argue 100+% of a carbon tax is passed to the user. So which is it?

This doesn’t necessarily make you an asshole - who knows maybe you really really need a truck to put food on your family’s table, who am I to judge - but it’s not just evil assholes/companies that cause emissions.
