This to me is one of the central stories about current US politics. The tech barons who decisively threw their support behind Trump wanted commercial benefits, of course; but even more, they wanted to discipline their own employees. That’s the real content of all the anti-DEI stuff.

This morning, 1000 protesters blocked MÆRSK's headquarter in inner Copenhagen in an action of disobedience inspired by Ende Gelände or Tute Bianche, in an attempt to stop the logistics of Israel's genocide. They were attacked by the police with gas and batons. www.dr.dk/nyheder/sene...

I was devastated to learn about Jim's passing last week. He was an incredible advisor and human being. I always walked into his office with a jumble of thoughts and left with analytic clarity - he had a rare gift, which he shared generously. stanforddaily.com/2025/02/19/j...

"No one loved sociology as much as Michael Burawoy." Thanks for writing this, @grundrza.bsky.social www.versobooks.com/blogs/news/t...

Michael was my friend. Also a mentor, a model for us all. He was kind, humble, had a generous spirit, an enormous heart, and a deep commitment to justice. He showed up, always. I miss you Michael. ucbfa.org/2025/02/mich...

The low-fi, high-function DeepSeek reveal reminds me of the old Cold War space race parable. NASA poured funds into inventing a zero-gravity ballpoint pen that would work in space. The Soviets just used pencils.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

First they came for the immigrants, and I spoke out, because I’ve read the damn poem before and I know how it ends.

Shared governance has been undermined across the UC system for a while. Academic bodies, like the senate, are lucky to be consulted and decisions are being made by administrators. Today at the Regents meeting, Jay Sures said the quiet part out loud.

Please allow me to re-share my rough sketch of some advanced carbon capture technology

They're right about one thing: "There's no equivalence--none--between Israel and Hamas." Between 10/7/23 and today: Hamas has killed 766 civilians. (1) Israel has killed around 300,000 civilians. (2)

Higher ed looking a lot like the US auto industry in the 90s/00s. Snap managerial decisions, uncoordinated downsizing, excessive reliance on tech, no solution to labor impasse, wild rebranding. Big difference is no federal bailout waiting in the wings.

I think reporting on this capability is basically as important as it gets

I wish more climate people would speak out against Biden’s support for genocide in Gaza. An authentic politics of life must include opposition to genocide.
