I think it’s a good move to take some wind out of PP’s sails. Carney will come up with a plan I’m sure. The carbon tax was divisive, unfortunately.

Here's where Carney and I part ways. Consumers are the ones commanding industry to pollute. So if his changes make fossil fuels cheaper at the pump (or airport/etc) then he'll regress on GHG decreases.

Ultimately Carney needs a real "plan" that discourages consumption of fossil fuels. The logical "market" way is a carbon tax.

So unless his plan is to massively invest in public transit and/or get the price of EVs magically down ... I don't get it.

I get the strategy but at the same time I hope this is a one off. The only reason the carbon tax is "toxic" is because the Liberal caucus refused to defend the plan against gaslighting/etc.

Carney needs to mobilize caucus to stand up for the party.

As a person on disability the rebate will be missed.
As it is not clawed back from the provincial disability plan like my CPPD.
I do not see the prices decreasing enough to replace the rebate.

Disappointing really. The carbon tax was slowly decreasing our emissions & is the best current way to affect change. Not only that but the rebate has helped many living below the poverty line struggling just to get by. Now we lose even that meagre help, to appease those that fell for "axe the tax"?☹️

Impossible really, the rebate is based on the revenue generated with the tax. What we have to keep our eyes on is grocery prices who won't come down and the high likelyhood that gas will creep up to take up the space left behind by the .17 cents per litre, I totally expect that.

I agree about the price creep for sure, and I also agree about the tax fueling the rebate, but I would be shocked if it wasn't effective of atleast providing a modicum of relief to low income people. I know it wasn't a lot but any money is better than none.

The rebates are paid in advance. For instance the rebate from Jan 15th is meant to cover Jan 15 onwards, etc. They're not paid retroactively.

My guess is there will be no April 15th rebate (onwards).

The problem here is while industry is the largest single emitters of GHG they're doing it on our behalf.

If consumers bought fewer fossil fuels the industry would produce fewer etc. Same goes for people buying air travel, etc.

I suspect many will be surprised at how much they miss the rebate. You can't have no carbon tax and your rebate, too. Lots of people will treat Carney as though he's robbing them of it. He should explain up front that he's doing this because this is supposedly what Canadians wanted, right?

Speaking as an adult Ed teacher (no raise above 1% until bill 124) who chose a house walking distance from work and who drives a Yaris, I will miss my rebates. All of which I kept. People had the dumb when it came to the rebate. I couldn’t explain it to them.

I, too, benefited from it. I don't have a car, take transit or walk to work, and don't pay for my heating. But, yes, trying to explain this to people proved to be difficult. The Libs should have done a better communication job from the onset. I don't know how much difference it would have made.

I would normally agree, but it seems that many people just want someone to say they'll fix it--even without a plan. That's how Trump won. He had no plan: just said he'll do magical things. Harris had a detailed plan that many didn't care to listen to. I'm not saying this is right, but that it is.

That’s why communication is an imperative. The party has to quickly flesh out details, and in these internet times that mean ‘Fast’. It’s for the leader to communicate these ‘plans’ in a concise but comprehensible manner that can be believed by the electorate. Right now we need someone to trust.
