Someone was asking for 80s fantasy recommendations, and I remembered Sunwolf and Starhawk. So I went to find those and realized I've missed a lot of her books. Always nice to find new things by a great author.

Sunwolf is a mercenary captain, and Starhawk his second. He turns down helping a city's women rescue their men from an evil wizard, so they kidnap him to force him to help. Starhawk sets out to find him. So 2 interweaving stories in book 1, setting up for a wider, world level magic crisis.

At the time, Barbara Hambly was one of the authors working to change the stale fantasy tropes of burly men hacking and slashing while bikini clad women were decorative prizes. There are still parts that are of their time, but I love these books for the change in direction they represent.

Isn't it?
It's a series about a female FBI agent whose husband kills himself without warning or reason. She then investigates and has to go off grid after she and her young son are horribly threatened. I finally bought the last book and am now rereading all the previous ones.

Iron Flame the sequel to 4th Wing. A Romancetasy that is pretty enjoyable, not too great or bad, the characters keep you wanting to read more. 💜💜💜

I started The Black House by Peter May, but it hasn’t grabbed me yet. It’s set on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. I recently saw the “Lewis Chessmen” in the British Museum, so thought it timely to begin the trilogy.

I finished The Black House, but won’t read any more by the author. Good story and dialogue, with well drawn characters, but way too much expository writing. I skipped a LOT. 📚❤️

I usually give a book 50-75 pages to catch me, and I move on if it doesn’t! I might set it aside to try another time, but more likely will let it go - it’s not for me.
