Ok I'm settling with the green on black. I'm also gonna experiment with remapping Esc to Caps (and Caps to right Shift) for easier time in Helix/vim. Any other keymap suggestions while I'm at it?

I typically do Caps to Control, or a variant of Hyper (all modifier keys held) to give you vim hjkl mapped to arrow keys. I used to do caps to esc for insert/normal mode swapping in vim, but found it hard to work with other modifier keys when I did so.

Oh, what problem did Caps to Esc cause? I really want to try that out so I'm curious why it didn't work out.

I use HHKB layout so I only have two modifiers left of space. Directly left of space is command, so I bad one left, which I used for control. I had map alt to a long tap on tab, and taping the tab key would give a tab. It’s super hanky. You don’t seem to be using an HHKB layout, so you should be OK

I’m on an actual HHKB and the general layout is pretty sublime once you get used to it. Strongly endorse mapping Control on the Caps Lock key. That’s prime real estate Caps is undeserving to hold.

Try binding right alt to be a layer hold for another layer with left hand numpad / arrow keys on HJKL.

Fair enough. If your KB supports layers and or macros. It's worth exploring those too. For example:
fn+h for =>
fn+> for ->
fn+w for ESC:wq!

Etc..
