My great-grandfather brought beavers back to OH where they did not exist at the time. He named his farm Beaverkettle (as it was in an area of kettle moraines). They are now flourishing along the Little Beaver Creek.

He was (I am told) an amazing guy. He was clever enough to buy a lot of land during the Depression when it was cheap. His descendants have kept the vast majority undeveloped and have deeded it scenic easement to the state of OH so it will remain pristine. We’re devoted to conservation.

His son (my maternal grandfather) was an amazing amateur naturalist. We used to go on horseback rides and he knew all the names of all the trees and flowers and mushrooms and plants and animals. He was such a profound influence on me. I still miss him every day.
