i wrote my BA thesis (on the effects of killer games on actual irl violence) by myself
we weren't allowed to use wiki then (2009/10ish)
it took me several months, but i did it, by myself, with books, some google, research and all that shit.
and i am fucking PROUD of it. AI won't give you any pride
It's unacceptable to post the work of a poet (in this case Joseph Fasano) without crediting their work. You should take this down immediately &repost w credit explicitly given. Otherwise, it's unethical. I doubt you like your words as a scholar being lifted without credit, do you?
Learning/work/effort is literally free. Other people's work generally isn't. Thinking you should get credit for work something/someone else did is actually a Grew Up Affluent Problem.
Most poor people understand they have to work for stuff if they want the stuff.
Thanks for showing up to tell us. And thanks for this poem. It's been a year of struggle to take care of the people I love, and this struck a chord with me.
Came here to say
"at least it was a human and not some AI bot appropriating your work"
but I clicked and read you pinned post
and now I'm undone
my god
Term papers are a construct of the weird idea that you need a degree to do most jobs. For most students, it is simply a requirement for another requirement that they will not need to perform a job they don't want, but need to live. Forget term papers, forget the paper ceiling.
If you're a person and find writing tedious or not something you enjoy ... are you even living? There are people who will tell you that they live through movement: expressive or repetitive or whatever. They're wrong.
I think the answer to your question is "don't go to college if you don't want to write papers that demonstrate that you're learning what you paid for."
That assumes that there's only one way to demonstrate what you've learned. To the extent that assumption is true (the only form of information transmission between humans is an essay), you're right.
If your classes require essays, chances are pretty good there's a reason for it. I developed a neurological condition and really struggled with mine, but still would't have used AI had it been available. My professors actually used my academic decline to point out that there was something wrong.
Professors don't require you to be the next Hemingway with your essay writing. Essays largely show that you're engaging with the work. If it is really, truly something that you are incapable of, it's worth talking to your professors about alternatives to demonstrate what you've learned. Don't cheat.
You're right. To the extent there's only one way to communicate, then you ought to try to learn that format.
I'm not sure that humans really are limited to essays as a form of information transmission. My art BA that set me up just fine for law school is a good example.
As a former game designer—no. Cheating at a video game is maybe an annoyance, but never learning to think on your own or write on your own is clearly a much larger issue.
The one who does the work does the learning. Originally meant to point out that students should contribute more to lessons than teachers but applies now to CheatGpt

It may as well just come from bots
I have nothing to say
And if I did it’d hardly matter
I’m either dumb or simply vacant
And I think I’d guess the latter

And I've already discussed this enough with someone else who wasn't as rude as you.
Muted.
It is beautiful work.
Thank you for this line. It sums up in 9 words how I felt about every great job I ever had.

But what are you trying
To be free of?
The living?
That’s a bullseye!

Though ‘living’ has never been a ‘miraculous task’ for me (thanks, mental disorders).
