When I was 5, my parents gave me a big box of boxes, tubes, cardboard, tubs, shiny foil, tape. It was THE BEST GIFT EVER. I don't think I've ever loved anything as much. I made stuff, I built stuff, I did all kinds of things. Because small kids have imaginations and don't need AI to do it for them.

My parents had an encyclopedia the size of my torso. Any time I tried to look something up I'd lose the better part of an hour reading everything else on the page. Today, people constantly ask me how I know about things.

my grandkids (4 and 2) don't have AI toys, but they do have their share of electronic toys. The happiest I've seen them the last few days is under a 'tent' made of cushions and drapes - chatting and laughing happily for a whole half hour without a single disagreeing sound

Not only does his kid not see anything fun about it...but she "knows" AI because he "Does AI" and cannot be bothered with it.

I'd even say that it's not a lack of imagination—easily remedied with a bit of play—but a lack of determination and willingness to put in the work to actually put words to page. Ideas are cheap, the execution is everything. These people don't want to "write a novel", they want to have written one.

Wanting AI to replace human writers isn't a lack of imagination problem, though. The problem is that they think there's a huge market of people willing to pay lots of money and spend lots of time reading the crap their AI puts out - they think others have the same lack of imagination they have.

I really like this formulation, and I think it applies to other kinds of writing too. You ask the AI to write your paper for you because either you can't or don't want to think of something yourself.
