my mom saw a video of elon musk and asked me how a guy who can't remember to take his hat off indoors is supposed to remember financial details of a nation and ykw, I got nothing

I truly don’t understand the fixation on other people wearing hats indoors. I have family members who get really angry about it, but I am not clear what makes it so offensive.
it's impolite to wear a hat in private spaces (eg, inside a house), but the specific valence here is that the US military simplified the rule to "uncover under cover", which bridges to "US gov't employees shouldn't wear hats inside" as a specific rule of professional etiquette, here
But what makes that gesture impolite? Does it signal something to the person you are with if you don’t remove a hat indoors in their presence? It must be some cultural significance that may have lost its universal meaning over time.
Interesting the focus on baseball style hats explicitly.
I am not a “hat person” and wear one for protection from elements (sun/rain) as needed but I understand them as a fashion choice. I would be annoyed having to carry it while indoors though
The statement of “here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?” Comes to mind. Perhaps older generations take it as. Slight you would rather be elsewhere since you didn’t remove your hat?
movie theaters are a public space, so you leave a hat on; the friction between "leave a hat on in public" and "take a hat off so you don't block the view from behind" is kind of the setup of the "take your hat off" jokes in eg Nancy Comics
But like yeah generally this is pretty fine-grained etiquette that's very much in "who cares" territory, kind of the archness of the comment, here, is that Musk is boorishly breaking one of these fine-grained etiquette rules at the same time as he is breaking other, larger, more important rules
Yeah we should listen to more grandmothers. Really, one of the best reforms we could have is more women in Congress. Because they don't put up with guy b*******.
I have terrible news for her about American men and hats these days. (They don’t take them off any more. I have never seen the top of some of my co-workers’ heads in the 9 years I’ve worked here.)
this is especially incredible as a position because she is sikh and has spent her entire life around men who wear turbans indoors at all points unless sleeping or showering

(Or is it vice signalling? Apparently good means bad now so who knows?)
It used to be rude.
Not that long ago.

Although, he has no problem remembering, he's just trying to hide his goofy ass head from the world. but the hat just accentuates it.
