Another way to say that is: They wanted alternative sources of news. What they got is alternatives to reality itself.

I find it a tiny irony that in my youth ( 70's ) we all thought the big media was too monolithic and wanted more alternate sources. And now we got em, in abundance!

I worked for Ted Turner in the 80s. Our mantra for CNN was “choice.” And cable operators (often rural types) would constantly say there was too much news already—why should we add 24 hours worth? Then the Challenger exploded and it was obvious.

The world is changing rapidly, climate, technology, immigration, etc., most people can’t handle it, conspiracy theories and alternate realities help them cope and/or escape.

Was thinking about this the other day. We went from alt weeklies that had real journalists who had real standards, to blogs, to social media, and it’s just gotten worse as the evolution occurs. Who knows what is next…

Back in the late 60's and early 70's I wrote articles and columns for the so-called underground newspapers. We aimed to show detailed reality that the mainstream publications tended to miss, distort, or gloss over. Blogging and now Substack seem to be the only link to those days.

Too much information is worse than no information at all. Having too much information increases your chance of getting it wrong, whereas no information makes you think more critically.

Yes. Because a lot of practices in journalism rest on the logic of "diverse perspectives upon a common set of facts." When that disppears the practices make little sense. But the news industry keeps using them to churn out "content."
