I have a theory that horror fans who are also fans of cinema more broadly gave up on the Oscars for good when Toni Collette didn’t even get a nomination for Hereditary.

I gave up on the Oscars quite a bit earlier, when "Pulp Fiction" didn't win Best Picture & Best Director. Now they're just something to distract myself with while Trump destroys the world.
I hear you, but there's horror and there's horror. "Psychological thriller" best describes the four films that gave those fine actors their relevant wins. Actual horror, featuring things impossible in our reality, is something different altogether.
Of the very highest quality (mostly), except "The Birds," which is horror in that it has something in it that defies explication. Speaking of Hitch, I just rewatched Shadow of a Doubt the other day after years & tears, & that's just something else! One of these days I have to watch Rebecca again.
I'll look for it. Do you like the 1973 film of DDM's "Don't Look Now" with Donald Sutherland & Julie Christie? Great stuff, though I haven't seen it in years.
Not yet, but it's in my "watch" folder. There's also an earlier (2010) animated French animated feature called "A Cat in Paris" which is pretty good, too!
Actually the Shining was initially panned pretty much across the board and considered a critical failure. People came around to it but for fans of the book the movie was almost unrecognizable. And Nicholson seems homicidaj from the first scene 😂 Still watch it several times a year though!
I totally agree, I think coming off of the year prior having shape of water do really well, it felt like hereditary getting snubbed was like retribution to me

Toni Collette is a fucking *treasure.*
