You're not wrong, but I think most of us grew up in a span of time where things were, for the most part, moving in the right direction. The country was healing old wounds and injustices more often than they were holding the line or reverting. These days though... Yikes.
It absolutely was. Definitely worse, but to see us backslide like this and to be living through it just hits a lot differently. Both of my grandfathers fought in WW2 and they’d be disgusted if they were still alive.
A lot of us were alive during Iraq, but the discussion never comes up about the 150k civilian deaths during the war, or the 1.5 million deaths (mostly children) that resulted from the sanctions.
Bruh, you live in a society that is the direct result of both.
Also, slavery persists to this day in the industrialized prison system and Native Land is still constantly under threat and seizure from state sponsored capitalist expansion
Sure, but at least by the time we became aware of that history, we were all universally (I thought) acknowledging the inherent evil and folly in those two things.
We still enslave the incarcerated and turn a blind eye to slavery that benefits us (mining, textiles, chocolate, etc). We still hold on to stolen land, refuse to make good on promises to those we have exploited in our past (examples as recent as Afghanis we abandoned), and support genocide.
Yeah but like you learn about that and that's the most disappointed you've been in America so far. Then they pile on more crap and you get even more disappointed.
Hey I’m from the uk and just wondering how is trump still so popular in the USA because I don’t see him doing anything good so far what’s the attraction to him ? I know not all support hun of course but he isn’t doing anything good for America at the moment
Hard to explain, but it kind of comes down to this: half the country is more interested in harming their neighbors than they are in securing a better life for themselves. Stupid? Absolutely. But here we are.

The media cycle is powerful.

Captain fuckin' Cook specifically encouraged syphilitic crew members to spread their pathogen among people living on islands they came across.
USA! USA! USA!
Too bad that doesn't seem to be the current trajectory.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Slavery is a sin all groups are guilty of. Europeans were the first group to abolish the practice.
Your worldview is demented.
I did live through Bush Jr though. That was a lot of shame for many years.
