I am an Australian and I can never forget the horror of the events of Kent State.
There was even a movie "The Strawberry Affair" inspired by the events but in a fictional frame.

I just watched "Turning Point in the Vietnam War" on Netflix this weekend. Such an eye-opening documentary. There were some very graphic images from the war, just as a warning, but they covered the Kent State protest too. Horrifying that our military turned on our own citizens!

Nearly 60 years and the song still brings tears. It also brought anger and determination. It should be remembered though that two of the kids killed were not protesters. They were just going about their lives on campus. And the "killers"were poorly trained kids. All victims of those "in charge".

None of these four were protesting. Two were standing watching the protest, two were walking from one class to their next. But yes, we should never forget what happened that day. We should also not forget that more than 60% of Americans polled at the time supported the shooting.

Part of the reason was because of deliberate obfuscation - the military and Pres. Nixon claimed that the students were violent and that there was a sniper, but this has turned out to be a lie.

8 Guardsmen were eventually charged with civil rights violations. A federal judge dismissed the case, noting that while he was absolutely not condoning the actions of the Guard the government failed to make their case in his court. I don't have the chops to know if the failure was deliberate.

Yes, really. That was one of several National Guard units, and nobody in any of the others opened fire.
