I audit phonics in schools and have seen many different schemes. As with any scheme, if it is implemented with fidelity and good teaching, it will get results.
In my previous school where I worked as SENCo, we implemented this scheme due to a huge lack of consistency in practice. I found it very boring, resource heavy and adult heavy. The results though, were positive for the children in mainstream classes, but it did not suit our C&L resource base at all
We have had incredible success with Little Wandle, from a very low starting point. In order to run it as it needs to be run, it is very adult heavy. Like all the schemes, do it well and it will probably work!
You’ve probably though but schs need to think if right fit for school for approach offer and budget. Initial and ongoing costs a factor also.
Not just because one of the big names.
We use it and we have had lots of success with it. It takes work to get everyone delivering consistently, but so does any SSP programme. We find the Rapid Catch-up interventions for KS2 very useful too.
