If you are a new parent, your newborn is more likely to die from a birth defect than your parents are to die from Alzheimer's, Stroke, Diabetes, and Flu combined. (Note: there are far more adults than infants; so total deaths are lower, but relative risk is very high.) 2/5

And, as if child deaths weren't heartbreaking enough, many survivable birth defects require lifelong medical care. Thus, >4% of ALL hospitalizations (for patients of ALL ages) are due to birth defects. Economic impact of birth defects is >22 billion dollars per year. 3/4
