The NYT doesn't even attempt to obscure what it's doing anymore. It's like the moment in a movie where the bad guy who has infiltrated the group is finally, definitively revealed, and his entire countenance and way of speaking changes.

I worked in the Justice Department for 22 years. Lying to an opposing party's attorney was forbidden. Lying to a Court was unthinkable. Plus you know, the Rules of Ethics thingy.
