Hopefully it won't ever be so hard to assure people of their safety, when the hypothetical Akinator-style engine is for something like "Why do you think being a scientologist is worth it?"

"Who would even use that?"... Well, I would do some opposite one, just to see it. (assuming privacy. Like, a hypothetical "why haven't you joined IS-IS yet?" Akinator doesnt sound intellectually intimidating to me, but if it collected addresses and you "win" an anthrax envelope...)

Supposedly, The key to avoiding the backfire effect is the follow through. Unfinished arguments register emotionally as strengthening existing beliefs, but a completed dialog can make a difference (after "who knows" how long). Who has time for that without being able to store and reuse that effort?

The basic model seems to cover most of the ground already, but would have to detect and isolate circular reasoning loops and call that out differently. It's also a lot of front loaded work populating the q+a (all while being a total failure, and backfiring). It still seems possible, to me
