I think it's worse than that: you not infrequently hear from people that of course we don't *actually* believe the Gospel as presented by the liturgy anymore.
It's a complicated balance of giving credence to the claim "The liturgy is a social construct and open to change" while maintaining "The liturgy is God's work and should not be changed lightly" especially to meet passing trends and without prayer and fasting.
I suspect, based on my exp, lots of folks answer with the Summary of the Law, or "God is love," or "We are loved," or "We are called to do God's work in the world," which are great things, yet I fear these principles are thought/articulated/practiced as to be disconnected from the paschal mystery
