I feel like we might need a systematic approach across the speedrunning community to archive VoDs on https://archive.org or other sites like it; with Twitch highlights no longer being a viable option YouTube becomes a single point of failure for the speedrunning community.

Basically we just need to stop relying on big corporations doing stuff for us effectively out of the goodness of their hearts, because that runs out quickly once $$$ becomes an issue.

As someone who was there since the beginning, it's so disappointing. Final nail in the coffin for twitch for me. Speedrunners made this website, back in the day. It was our home. The fucked up part? There is no alternative platform that's effective for speedrunners. YT has no discovery at all

Nope. There is a 12 hour limit for live streams, but it does not apply to uploaded videos.

You’re too kind 😅 I went 6 hours over, attempting an 11 hour FF13 category for the first time.

The run is more known for going sideways, and being captured on a webcam because I didn’t trust my kittens to avoid chewing up my hauppauge.

With no game audio, i put the soundtrack playlist on shuffle 😵‍💫

no, but after a certain amount of time, older videos get compressed to save space. I went through my liked videos playlist recently and a few from like 2012 and before were hard to watch. the quality was already bad back then, but yeesh.

archival really needs to be a wider community effort imo, not just among each individual speedrunner themselves. work with your favorite speedrunning discords to archive historical runs before they're lost to time

External storage is as cheap as it's ever been! There needs to be a community effort to encourage backing up streams, especially records. Don't rely on corporations to do the right thing!

no, it's expensive and I gave up on it after an external drive died and corrupted all the data. you don't understand how fast you can fill a 2 and/or 4 terabyte hard drive with video, like in less than 6 months. they can exist on google's servers for all I care and honestly if they go, oh well.

You'd be surprised how much space you can save by running footage through a compression app like handbrake. The point is Google isn't going to keep your footage forever/they might switch to making you pay for storage in the future.

I mean the chats get deleted after a certain amount of time anyway, no? That's part of the reason I always say chat should be part of the stream layout. People want to see what the chat was like during the run, after it gets uploaded to youtube

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I'm part of a group Archiving a Twitch channel's past work going back to 2014. We've archived and reuploaded everything from that point, but I'm uncertain if this will mean the official uploads will disappear soon.
