As with any opposition effort; "Divide & conquer" is the first means utilized. Think carefully about what/who you're funding.
but the client app code ("social-app" on github) is open and folks can run alt deployments for alt infra
think it is cool and fine for folks to build indie apps which make everybody configurable, if they chose to do so.
w/ OAuth it is pretty easy to try new apps

I think the Mastodon governance change (which is great!) was probably driven by losing non-profit status; and general org maturity (split OSS project from instance operations) and need for non-BDFL governance (see also wordpress)
I hope this announcement will bring more (positive) attention and resources to the many existing indie projects and apps in the atmosphere
