Silicon Valley tech billionares bought up large parts of my town and tried to manipulate people into letting them build their own town, marketing it as a utopia of jobs and resources. Understanding that Stephenson is kind of a dipshit and that Gibson deserved a lot of the praise he got over the years was one of those lightbulb moments for younger me. The world of Snow Crash is fucking terrible but Stephenson does a horrible job of portraying it as such.

Stephenson is too focused on the Cool Factor of the whole thing to really lay out a critique, and frankly that's *fine*, like the dude is an action writer and he's pretty good at it. That we treat it like some seminal work of cyberpunk lit and not like a schlocky action sci fi book is the problem.

Agreed 100%. Like, I was stoked when I read Snow Crash sure, but thankfully I had read Neuromancer first. I also find Gibson's poignant phrasing and illustrative writing to be superior to this day and while I haven't read the SPRAWL trilogy in quite a long time a lot of it has not left me.
