Kursk was a failure and I'm not sure if trying something like that again is the best option right now but I suppose Ukraine is going to try anything at this point.
We ofc have no way of knowing the original plans, but any large occupation was always fanciful. If the point was to force the russians to fight on their own land, then by all accounts it's a success. It's not like Ukraine is looking to annex these areas.
Yes it's costly, you could argue it didn't relieve pressure on other fronts, but we don't know what pressure would have looked like without it.
