I was a corrections nurse for a minute.

Our jail was $30/day and $10 for ID. COs would take or break an ID to harass and intimidate inmates. One woman had her ID taken almost every single day for 6 months until I reported it after she came to medical in hysterics over her ID.

I have a friend who was arrested on a warrant for someone else. They figured it out they had the wrong dude, but didn't bother telling him or releasing him for three more days *AFTER* they realized they had the wrong guy.

Then they billed him for all those days in jail.

In the UK if you get jailed for a crime you didn’t commit then your conviction is overturned you can get compensation for wrongful imprisonment, and they do deduct accommodation costs from that. Never thought that was right but as usual the US takes things way further!
