I work with young people and there is NOTHING for them to do in England. They can’t hang out as they get moved on, cinema or bowling or even just McDonalds is expensive - and that’s if you can get there. We have made leisure centres member only too. Plus schools all use apps and hw is online. - ThreadSky

A really big difference I noticed between Germany and the UK this summer was that teens were barely on their phones and spent hours and hours swimming at local municipal pools with their friends or playing informal sports, often for just a couple of euros. We have few comparable facilities here.

Exactly. We are well off but realistically cinema/bowling/MaccyD has to be an occasional thing and quite honestly I don’t want my kids doing all that very much anyway.

Agree. There is just no free sport for their age, a lot of the youth clubs around that do happen are church led and VERY religious, the sad thing is that we have lost communities that step up and volunteer and parents often don’t make their kids respect those who do.

volunteered in my local park but is all old people like me doing the flower borders going mad when there is any graffiti or litter but trying to get the football pitches baketball court looked after is bottom of the list

And sadly there is always an element of vandalism which we have seen with the riots- always fools looking to ruin things for the majority who act with respect. It is why I wish schools could be funded to provide clubs over the summer for free- it is all there

My teen daughters have been lucky to get summer jobs as lifeguards at the local lido. The older one is 18 and does a lot, camping, climbing, swimming etc. The younger one seems to spend a lot of her time with her friends baking or playing board games!

cadets. scouts/guides, grassroots football, youth theatre (free in case one my daughter er goes too,) youth clubs (very active one based at the fire station at back of my house) also the hive in birkenhead , grassroots cricket, the beach - am i just lucky where i live ?

As a Scout leader, neither Scouts nor Guides is especially cheap, defiantly not free. Lots of parents have to budget hard for term’s fees and not all will be able to afford camps (and even if unit will cover, not everyone will accept it). There’re also fewer units due to a shortage of volunteers.

Yup, my 16 year old couldn’t even find volunteer work this summer, we’d have to drive her anywhere and there is pretty much nothing free, same for most kids I work with. It is getting to stuff and home that is hard. We ran out of adult volunteers too.

Apart from the weekly sessions at the music co-op in Morecambe, which is awesome and I'm so grateful for it, the main thing my teens do with their friends is go out for long walks. And it's great they get fresh air and exercise but they do that because there's fuck all else

Yup, when I was a teen in central Massachusetts, US, in the 90s, we 1) had sex, 2) drank alcohol and smoked, and 3) got a booth at the local Friendly's (a diner-style restaurant chain) and ordered nothing but coffee. 😬
