OK - from this TV angle it hits his arm

Did the ball hit Kai Havertz's hand? VAR disallowed the goal for handball.

Does it though? Looks to me like it hits his torso? But… that’s the one and only angle we’ve seen of this. Is that conclusive? No. And why did we not have the usual song and dance of VAR slowing down and showing the play from more angles? Why does it feel that this call was made by Gary Neville?

I honestly think if it had not hit his arm then everyone would have absolutely lost their minds… but the protest was a bit weak considering it was ostensibly a fair goal being ruled out.

I think…ultimately…they got the call right, but I have serious questions about the process. If “Clear and Obvious” is the threshold, this play was neither clear nor obvious, and I don’t understand how they made the call this quickly, and didn’t even send the ref to the monitor.

I'm pretty sure it only hits his forearm and the only reason we're unsure is because he closes his body from the camera. Either way I don't think we can have any complaints, he's scored with his arm.

I'm not suggesting he's trying to hide from the camera just that his movement makes it look ambiguous but in reality the ball strikes his forearm and it obviously shouldn't be a goal.

Maybe brushed the right hand but he is spinning away to avoid hitting it with his arm and I don’t actually see it. It would be nice to think that VAR had a better angle rather than just saying fuck it, close enough.

I accept it happens very quickly but the way he turns his body and ball loops makes it clear that it could have only hit his left hip. If it hit his right forearm it would have taken the pace off the ball rather than looping it over the keeper.

Yeh, its not intentional and his arm is by his side. It wouldnt be a penalty for similar action by defender but the law is clear that if goal is directly scored after touching the hand/arm it will be disallowed. Intent plays no part in that law.

Either way — it’s just a bummer. That’s important goals ruled out by VAR (even if rightly) in a number of matches now. Just unfortunate and makes the results hurt that much more.

I had been looking at the left arm the whole time, this makes it clear that it’s the right arm that’s the one in question. What is absolutely not clear is that it unambiguously does hit the right arm. I think it does but that’s not how this is supposed to work.

Yeh same. Now I've read this I can see it hitting the right forearm, prior to that I was focusing on his left arm and all I could see was it hitting his stomach. Optical illusion!
