I can’t believe that we now have two luscious Dionysian-laced rooms like this in Pompeii. I can’t wait to go back and see this one in person. I had a wonderful time viewing the Black Room and the Blue Room (or whatever they’re calling it now). Now I wanna see the Red Room.

The restoration of the frescoes in the Villa dei Misteri has completely changed how they appear, which is now more fresh, and far less dark. The downside is that you can no longer enter the Dionysian mysteries room - you’re kept behind a barrier at the entrance.

It’s still very dark in the room, with just the spots on the cleaned frescoes. They now keep the southern shutters closed, to keep the sunlight well away from those cinnabar walls.

Yes, I figure at the very least it was a known iconic Dionysian figure. The most interesting thing about this new fresco cycle is that they're all standing on pedestals, clearly meant to be statues, but they're impossible statues. They've come to life - the power of Dionysus!

There’s a big debate about this. I personally believe that fresco and mosaic workshops had so-called pattern books (prob. papyrus scrolls) depicting famous scenes, many from Greek paintings. Some may have been known from famous statues, coins, small statuettes, et al.

That sounds completely plausible. I've got no reason to think they didn't; it's something that could be invented pretty much any time there's an art workshop. But I haven't heard of us actually finding one.

We had this conversation in another thread just a couple of weeks ago. Yes, there's actually one or two scraps of papyrus that have detailed sketches which are thought to be part of a pattern book (found in Egypt). But this is ephemeral stuff and we see evidence via inference.

It's definitely possible that some kind of pattern book was used, or that the image of the dancing maenad with her back turned was just very well-known and iconographic. Yeah, stupid prudish algorithms are driving me nuts. We don't need this kind of 'protection'.
