If your greatest accomplishment in life is familiarity with the pop culture of the USA in the 1980s, then I pity you. I share that familiarity, but my pride comes from the useful things I've done for my fellow humans.

You can do better than that. Your bank balance LOL joke was better!
He said, pointedly, that the clerk didn't ask any questions.
It's not elitist to _be aware_ of differences in generational cultures. It IS elitist to mock people for not recognizing 867-5309. There's far many posts on social media valorizing "I get the reference" to 1980s USA culture.
As an adult advisor in youth programs, I've had close contact with Gen X, Y and Z. I also know some Gen V and W culture; when Captain America recognized "flying monkey", so did I. Generational cultural literacy is fun. But generational _hipsterism_ is elitist, whether it's phone dials or HDMI.
We aren't asking for the fun of it. We are asking because it's for a rewards program our bosses are making us ask. And half of the time when we don't ask, customers get pissed at us because they didn't get the discount they wanted.
If you don't want to give it, don't.
Last time i used it i got a really odd look from the cashier
Ah, for the could have beens. This proves they're as confused by us as we are by them.
How often do you think I hear this exact sequence of references, in this order?
It doesn't, I just do it because I get offended that people think I'm stupid enough to fall for it. If you're gonna lie to me, make me work for it.
Also, you’re old.
Also, also? So am I, obviously.
