Surely the more truly desperate the more dangerous the journey. It is impossible to prevent that fact. Refugees need to be embraced not grilled over why their trip wasnt safer. We regularly remember and honour those who guided refugees throughout history. The Govt must enable safe routes.

Soft touch how? We prevent them from working, stick them in shabby hotels or flats and make them dependant on state benefits. They want to work, contribute, improve their lives. IMO we need to have a response to the concerns that make certain demographics here fearful of losing their culture. Asserting that there is no issue, present or future, creates a vacuum for fascists to fill. Refugees are welcome because it has *these* positive, measurable effects.

No, they can apply in the EU.

It is effectively the UK withdrawing from the UN Refugee Convention, which is shameful, but the convention was written at a time when refugees sought haven in the first safe country.

It's not fit for purpose in a globalised world, save is basically used for migration.

If our government had any credibility or decency it would be calling for it to be replaced with one which requires nearest safe haven, global funding and support for host countries, and managed resettlement schemes (which exist but probably need review to ensure adequate quotas).
