Skunk cabbage near our home here in Western NY is one of few plants known to exhibit thermogenesis, the ability to metabolically generate heat by breaking down stored starch in its roots, releasing energy in the form of heat (>30°C above surroundings) that melts snow & permits early spring bloom. 🧪
