“Now, it feels like NASCAR has learned all the critical viewers are just sickos who will keep watching no matter what, so the series can make actively hostile decisions about the championship and the racing, and it won't impact its bottom line.”

i’ve always been somewhat sympathetic to the concern of having seasons where someone just runs away with the points championship. But growing up a racing fan, that was part of the fun. It made close championship races all the more exciting
Big money ruins everything it touches. Boy-racer parades are pure boredom.
I do like that when one or two teams dominate it leaves room for a ton of down-market fights that are almost more interesting to watch. As evidenced by the popularity of the F1.5 rankings.
This, this, and more this. The next gen car caused a massive brain drain from NASCAR in the name of cost saving. While teams were forced to buy spec parts that weren’t up to race grade parts.
See one of these cars up close and if you have any sense, it’s a POS.
Excellent synopsis of what has happened to the series. It is completely unwatchable and they have absolutely decided to a small group of “fans” that are of no interest to big advertisers. I see a CW tv deal in the future.
