“‘The endowment may be smaller four years from now than it is today, but Harvard will survive Trump,’ predicted Daniel Hemel, an NYU tax law professor. ‘If it could survive the Revolutionary War, it’s going to make it through Trump.’”

So many of the people taking us down, are Harvard grads. Will Scharf, of Project 2025 fame. John Roberts, Ted Cruz,Tom Cotton,Neil Gorsuch,Peter Hegseth, Elise Stefanik, Vivek Ramaswamy, RFKJr. “This roster speaks against the ideological homogenization charge that is too often levied against Harvard
What's the interest, including investments, on $500 billion? Bet it's enough to run that school forever. My understanding is that Ben Franklin gave the school an endowment of $500. It's kinda grown since then.
Rooting for you Harvard, but while you’re at it with fighting the Trumpism cancer, could you get some better ethics courses? Too many alums who are gleefully siding with the fascists here.
So did Ted Cruz. He's not attacking Harvard just because of Obama. He's attacking Harvard because he's a dictator, and dictators HATE higher education.
Even if it limps through as a hollow shell for a while, it will survive. If it bends the knee, it will never be a respected institution again, effectively committing suicide, for someone whom couldn't pass first year there.
Honestly, I'd take a hundred equity admission graduates from Harvard over a guy whose dad bought him a Wharton degree but clearly never passed a single exam in his major.
Why is there an implied 4 years? If they are fighting this on Constitutional grounds then all of it is at risk
What stops him from declaring a National Emergency that calls off the 2028 election? A court order? 😂. Who enforces THAT?
We need to stop making foolish naive assumptions
This is short-term thinking. It's not just about Harvard v Trump, but academic freedom vs control. Is there any indication that the people who surround and influence Trump, including the billionaires who now own Heritage, are just going to give up with the end of Trump? What they will do is
regroup, and figure out how to come again -- much as they did after Trump's first defeat. And all the while they'll keep attacking education (and keep in mind, education is only part of the liberalism they so hate), while the liberals think the danger is past. Just like in 2020.
Which is why Dems need a plan now to make sure this never happens again, and frankly it means jail time. It means severe punishment for corruption. It means mechanisms to remove politicians and the president that don’t involve Congress
What the Democrats need to do is outline the fact that this is a struggle of liberalism vs reaction, which side they stand on, what the stakes are and that they will fight like hell for them. The oligarchs know EXACTLY that's what this is; I don't get the sense the liberals do.
You would think some billionaire somewhere would fund a new Conservative Party so they can break the fascist Republican hold on the congress. I’m sure a few real republicans still exist.
Eventually will the billionaires realize it’s futile to spend millions to get Trump elected and then spend tens of millions to prevent Trump from destroying everything you love?
Do alcoholics realize spending $ on their alcohol ruins their lives & the lives of others? Only about a third of alcoholics who go into recovery stay there. Oligarchs would need to do some inner work to reach the sort of realization you suggest. Touching hot stove won't suffice; alcohol numbs pain.
Absolutely!
Greed works exactly as addiction does… never enough money, never satisfied always feening for more and like addicts the greedy will destroy their own environment by cutting corners and 💩ing in their own nest for larger profits.
They are laser focused while everyone around them suffers.
Currently running to be PM, Harvard alum @mark-carney.bsky.social says the same thing about Canada surviving Trump. He managed Brexit & 08/09 for 2 countries.
One of the most dangerous thing in the world is a front runner in power who’s actions are implemented from falling behind. Expect heavy diet of lies, projections and false equivalencies. Key to being a front runner is they never admit defeat. Trump is a leader in weakness.
Wait until trump finds out Harvard's endowment has been selling off it's treasures notes.
Now, we just need the rest of join the resistance.
In other news; Indiana Gov. Mike Braun just seized the power to appoint the board of trusties away from IU alumni.
Cornell, Harvard, Yale, etc having huge endowments from their alumni used to bug me but now? Go alumni go! I said this before that they don’t need fed money, it’s just nice to cushion the coffers.
Trump isn't really the one we have to worry about. It's who comes next and who has enabled him. Trump picked Vance because he's so much worse that Trump has assumed there's no way in hell anyone would impeach him for fear of what Vance would be like. I can see the GOP getting rid of Trump so...1/
they can install Vance, even if that means they have destroy the Constitution and make him the dictator. In case you haven't noticed, they've made it clear installing a Christian Nationalist dictator is exactly what they intend to do.
what about the evolutionary war @gtconway.bsky.social Where we're headed with Trump is more dangerous and with more vindictiveness than the revolutionary war.
I had a musing of them taking stock of their resources, all agreeing they could make it through, then saying "Well, then....f%ck him!" And I love that moment in my muse.
Harvard will prevail over this regime. Their action is a beacon that I hope will strengthen others to say no more. A righteous battle will win the day. Harvard is doing right by leading so others will know the path through the days of darkness ahead.
My hope and guess isost Harvard students and faculty would rather study outside in the snow and eat peanut butter sandwiches rather than surrender their values and brains to a bumbling dictator robber barron.
Harvard should do a gofundme. There are probably a lot a people out here that would donate to a good cause. Anyone standing up to trump gets my vote & my $$.
I worked thru the 08 recession there, and they did a voluntary early retirement program to shed staff. Guess what? less than 4 years later, the endowment doubled, easily regained losses. Of course they will survive this.
My 92 year old Harvard law mom couldn't be happier. So proud of her alma mater-as am I that my mom went there. May wisdom and knowledge continue the good fight!!
That sunny optimism of the pulled quote seems misplaced. Yes, it has a big endowment, but as the article says, most of that is tied up in specific projects. Money dedicated to the marching band isn't going to stem cell research. And the article says billionaire donors aren't coming through.
The problem here is that Harvard is more well-endowed than Trump is. He hates and envies anything better endowed than he is (which is to say, anything larger than a mouse).

with a huge dose of fear, loathing, and pessimism thrown in.
