Literally intended to create an environment in which they can shape and control consumer choices, voting behaviors, beliefs, etc., by generating false perceptions of consensus, community, and belonging...or by generating the opposite.

Haha...nah...they flagged my account itself for how I reacted to some trolls...so forever a pariah, and I'm fine with that. Social media is nothing but a giant societal portapotty anyway, and anyone (myself included) choosing to swim in it is a turd.
This framing is so bad because it should be assessed as “our consumer base is aging and shrinking and our engagement metrics are down and since that affects our ad sales, we’re gonna make an expensive Clippy that aims to get you to follow the bouncing balls because we’re fucking desperate.”
I'm old enough to remember when FB finagled some metrics to convince people to "pivot to video." Anyone who gives them money would be foolish to rely on their numbers.
Yeah I mean that was just mendacious lying and an inability of any advertiser to audit them. This is a fundamental shift in business model (about which they will also lie, but still)
I still use Facebook for a couple of very specific groups I belong to, but lately my feed includes literally thousands of idiotic, unwanted "recommendations" for wildly irrelevant groups and celebrities. Blockety-block, but still they come, drowning out the posts I want to see. AI will be worse.
I know a certain billionaire whose name rhymes with “tusk” that would love to have a few AI generated friends that would reply to their social media posts with words of praise and encouragement. Saves time otherwise spent creating and maintaining fake ALT accounts.
The sad thing is, they could just go back to what made Facebook popular in the first place: allowing people to connect with friends and see what people are up to.
People left because 90% of what you see there is ads and sponsored content by people/groups you don't know and didn't ask to see.
Seriously, they had the perfect model and purposely fucked it up. This is probably just going to drive most of the remaining people out, and Facebook will be nothing but its own chat bots chatting with each other. I don't think that's going to make for every effective return on advertising dollars.
Yeah, and it will put an extra strain on the power grid, leading to higher electricity prices and costs to expand the grid, and increased burning of fossil fuels.
They already push the most hateful content under the banner of "it increases engagement" despite the fact the engagement is nothing but angry people yelling at each other..
So glad I deleted my acct fuck that cesspit
The Tech world has come full circle; now, the ideal social media platform has no users and no content -- no social element and no media -- just simulacra of them with managers running around to take investors' money.

Rude to who? Meta??
Seems like yet another occasion of a tech innovation in search of a use case.
Then again, this is why experience teams are being replaced on AI projects with wireframe monkeys: don’t ask those questions!
