My favorite part of this whole thing is he said that he wanted to just go by Cope because it was shorter. So instead of getting rid of the "The Rated R Superstar" part, he decided to get rid of his name instead of the dumb nickname 🤣

I like Cope but I also think them announcing him as "Cope" instead of "Adam Copeland" it feels weirdly contrived. Him using "Cope" as a nickname is great. Him using it as an official name rings a little false. Maybe it feels like a marketing construct.

I just finally got used to Adam Copeland.

It's not so much that the name sucks, it's that I personally don't think it's intimidating. If there was a guy gunning for my theoretical top spot in AEW and his name was Cope, I wouldn't take him seriously.

The whole point is to tell compelling stories. Cope has a compelling story with Mox as one of the few guys with the history and experience to take him down. He won’t and shouldn’t, but it’s still a good story. If the only point was to build new stars, you’d never have someone get a second reign.

The Cope Open is one of the examples of shortening his name without taking away from it. It works because we know who he is and that this is a version of it. Making it his full identity in the show diminishes that and seems to say he needs to lean as much into who he was in WWE as possible to work.
