i feel like people also forget that books don't stay in print forever - it's hard to find books that are only two or three years old, let alone ten or twenty. like. i've been actively hunting for missing titles in an old series and have only found them in library retirement sales via ebay.

Bullshit. I never had to recommend an alternative to Harry Potter to my kids because they don't want EXACTLY Harry Potter 'but not bad'. They only 'need a replacement' if you've already made HP a part of their lives because you the parent weird and obsessed. See also Disney Adults.
